India’s Biggest Comedy Group Faces Police Probes For “Obscene” Content In A Celebrity Roast

6 Feb. 2015

Freedom of expression in the world’s biggest democracy is under attack as police, politicians, and religious groups unite to target the country’s first celebrity roast they deem offensive and against Indian culture.
All India Bakchod (AIB), India’s biggest comedy group, is facing multiple investigations by the police, after they hosted the country’s first celebrity roast featuring prominent Bollywood celebrities.
The Mumbai-based comedy collective roasted two Bollywood actors, Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor, on Dec. 20 in front a live audience of around 4,000 people that included several other A-listers.
An edited version of the roast was uploaded to YouTube a month later, getting more than a million views within hours. It eventually reached around 10 million hits across three parts before the group took down the entire video on Feb. 3, after several police complaints and threats from political parties that objected to what they considered the vulgar, obscene, and sexually explicit content of the roast.
Religious organizations in Mumbai demanded the police to take action against AIB, the actors, YouTube, and others for violating religious and cultural sentiments. In a written police complaint, the president of a Mumbai-based right-wing Hindu organization, Akhilesh Tiwari, said the show was “extremely abusive and it is not only ruining the clean image of the Indian culture and women, but is also misleading today’s youth.
The police action would be a deterrent to them so that they would not dare to do such acts publicly in future,” Tiwari said, while questioning their audacity to pass “dirty comments.” The president of a local Christian youth group that marched to the police station to register a criminal complaint said the show was “against Christ.”

Kay Kay Menon: I have no issues with what I call anti-gravity films

30 Jan.2015

Rahasya isn't your run-of-the-mill film, which is probably why actor Kay Kay Menon is a perfect fit for it. Directed by Manish Gupta, the crime thriller also features Ashish Vidyarthi and Tisca Chopra in pivotal roles.
Kay Kay, who plays investigating officer Sunil Paraskar in this murder mystery, says, "The script intrigued me right from the start. What makes it interesting is that it has a realistic feel to it. When the audience watches the film, they will be able to relate to it. I think it's important for a movie to establish that connect with the audience."
Manish seconds him, saying, "I believe in realistic cinema and particularly enjoy the genre of suspense. This movie exposes the dark side of human nature. It shows the lows to which people can stoop when certain situations force them to." Of late, Kay Kay has been enjoying a mix of niche and commercial films like Baby and Haider.
Point it out and he says, "I have no issues with what I call 'anti-gravity' films. I call them so because they defy logic and seem to be happening on another planet altogether.
But as an actor, I like my films to be believable. Whether I do mainstream or niche films, my character and the story have to be plausible." Rahasya, presented by Viacom18 Motion Pictures and produced by UVI Film Productions, releases today. Produced by Monica Vimal Maluka, this film marks Kay Kay's second venture with the director after The Stoneman Murders.
Understandably, the two have attained a comfort level. Says the actor, "What I like about Manish is that he is extremely focused when he is making a film. He will not think of or talk about anything else. He is passionate about getting every frame right and that rubs off on you."
In the same vein, Manish adds, "I had first met Kay Kay when I was working on Sarkar as a writer. I had liked his performance so much that I had told him that if I ever turn director, I will cast him in my films. For Rahasya, he was my first choice. He always gives his inputs and adds to the character he is playing. He is a brilliant actor and I feel Bollywood hasn't fully tapped his potential yet."

Big B says it was great to have Rekha in the film
IT'S ALWAYS GREAT WELCOME TO HAVE SUCH GREAT LUMINARIES IN THE FILM," BIG B SAID DURING THE LAUNCH OF THE FILM'S TRAILER Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who stars with veteran actress Rekha in R Balki's Shamitabh, says they however don't share screen space in the film.
"We don't actually come together, it's part of the sequence and when you see the film, you will understand how it's portrayed. But, yes it's always great welcome to have such great luminaries in the film," he told reporters during the film's trailer launch.
"Balki keeps saying he wants to design a film with us (Big B and Rekha) but let's see if somebody comes with interesting script. Why not," he added.
Shamitabh also features Dhanush and Akshara Haasan among others.
Mr Bachchan says for this film, they have recorded the dialogues first before shooting for the film.
"The entire script of the film was recorded first, all the dialogues I recorded in my voice. When we used to shoot, we used to play the recordings and shoot. There was too much of work and we had worked hard for this film. Balki said do what I say and now after the film was ready, we again did the dubbing. It's a different film for me as I have never done like this before and the credit goes to Balki."
