GREAT PATRIOT AND EDUCATIONIST MAULANA ABUL KALAM AZAD
Our Correspondent, 13 Nov 2014

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad's real name was Abul Kalam Ghulam Muhiyuddin. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was one of the foremost leaders of Indian freedom struggle. He was also a renowned scholar, and poet. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was well versed in many languages like Arabic, English, Urdu, Hindi, Persian and Bengali. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was a brilliant debater, as his name, which literally means "Lord of dialogue" He adopted the pen name Azad as a mark of his mental emancipation from a narrow view of religion and life. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was born on November 11, 1888 in Mecca. His father, Maulana Khairuddin, left India during the Sepoy Mutiny (the first war of Independence) and proceeded to Mecca and settled there. He came back to Calcutta with his family in 1890. Maulana Abul Kalaam Azad was a revolutionary from his early days. After completion of his studies, he started an Urdu News Magazine, Al-Hilal. He wanted to bring Muslims into the Congress fold. He was eager to see the end of British rule in India and it was this eagerness that made him to join the Bengal revolutionaries. Abul Kalam was sent to prison in 1916 for his revolutionary ideas. When Gandhi supported the Khilafat movement, Abul Kalam became the President of Khilafat Committee. He was jailed many times between 1920 and 1945. He represented and led the Congress in talks with the British on many occasions including Cripps mission and Simla session in 1945. He was President of Congress Committee for many years. His contribution to Indian Nationalist Movement was invaluable. Maulan Azad was born in Mecca. After some years, his family moved to India. He was symbol of Muslim Nationalist Movement. He was first Union Education Minister in the post-independance period. Maulana Azad wrote book titled “India Wins Freedom” which was published posthumously. Abul Kalam was a great patriot of the highest order. He was awarded “Bharat Ratna” in the year 1992. Because of his orthodox family background Azad had to pursue traditional Islamic education. He was taught at home, first by his father and later by appointed teachers who were eminent in their respective fields. Azad learned Arabic and Persian first and then philosophy, geometry, mathematics and algebra. He also learnt English, world history, and politics through self study. Azad was also trained and educated to become a clergyman, He wrote many works by reinterpreting the holy Quran. His erudition let him to repudiate Taqliq or the tradition of conformity and accept the principle of Tajdid or innovation. He developed interest in the pan¬ Islamic doctrines of Jamaluddin Afghani and the Aligarh thought of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan. Imbued with the pan-Islamic spirit, he visited Afghanistan, Iraq, Egypt, Syria and Turkey. In Iraq he met the exiled revolutionaries who were fighting to establish a constitutional government in Iran.
CONTRIBUTION TO REVOLUTIONARY MOVEMENT
On his return from abroad; Azad met two leading revolutionaries of Bengal- Aurobinto Ghosh and Sri Shyam Shundar Chakravarty,-and joined the revolutionary movement against British rule. Azad found that the revolutionary activities were restricted to Bengal and Bihar. Within two years, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad helped set up secret revolutionary centers all over north India and Bombay. During that time most of his revolutionaries were anti-Muslim because they felt that the British government was using the Muslim community against India's freedom struggle. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad tried to convince his colleagues to shed their hostility towards Muslims. In 1912, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad started a weekly journal in Urdu called Al-Hilal to increase the revolutionary recruits amongst the Muslims. Al-Hilal played an important role in forging Hindu-Muslim unity after the bad blood created between the two communities in the aftermath of Morley-Minto reforms. Al-Hilal became a revolutionary mouthpiece ventilating extremist views. 'The government regarded Al- Hilal as propagator of secessionist views and banned it in 1914. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad then started another weekly called Al-Balagh with the same mission of propagating Indian nationalism and revolutionary ideas based on Hindu-Muslim unity. In 1916, the government banned this paper too and expelled Maulana Abul Kalam Azad from Calcutta and interned him at Ranchi from where he was released after the First World War 1920.
CONTRIBUTION TO INDIAN FREEDOM STRUGGLE
After his release, Azad roused the Muslim community through the Khilafat Movement. The aim of the movement was to re-instate the Khalifa as the head of British captured Turkey. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad supporded Non-Cooperation Movement started by Gandhiji and entered Indian National Congress in 1920. He was elected as the president of the special session of the Congress in Delhi (1923). Maulana Azad was again arrested in 1930 for violation of the salt laws as part of Gandhiji's Salt Satyagraha. He was put in Meerut jail for a year and a half. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad became the president of Congress in 1940 (Ramgarh) and remained in the post till 1946. He was a staunch opponent of partition and supported a confederation of autonomous provinces with their own constitutions but common defence and economy. Partition hurt him greatly and shattered his dream of unified nation where Hindus and Muslims can co-exist and prosper together.
SPREADING NATIONALISM THROUGH MEDIA
Maulana Azad had a natural inclination for writing and this resulted in the miraculous start of the monthly "Nairang-e-Alam" in 1899 at Calcutta when he was hardly eleven years old. The periodical carried the poetical collection of the contemporary poets. This was followed by the launch of the weekly "Al-Misbah" in 1900 which carried articles on contemporary issues. But the genesis of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad's revolutionary journalism was in 1908. He was of the view that the Freedom Movement against the British is the combined responsibility of all communities and hence it should be carried unitedly. With these nationalist and patriotic thoughts in his mind, Maulana Azad started the "Al-Hilal" News Magazine and a weekly by the same name. The "Al-Hilal" weekly was a landmark in the history of the journalism in India. Its circulation figures rose to 26,000 copies. Further, even back issues of this weekly had to be republished as every new subscriber wanted to hold all copies of "Al-Hilal". The message of patriotism and nationalism coupled with religious fervor inherent in the weekly gained wide acceptance among the masses. 1915, barely five months after the ban on "Al-Hilal", Maulana Azad started the publication of the "Al-Balagh" weekly. It was similar in its content to "Al-Hilal". The British realized that the provisions of the Press Act are not enough to counter the onslaught of Maulana Azad's writings. Hence the Maulana Azad was asked to leave Calcutta after the Defence of India Provisions were invoked against him in 1916. Punjab, U.P., Delhi and Bombay also prohibited his entry under the same law. Bihar was the only state in which he could move without any hindrance. But the moment he reached Ranchi he was kept under house arrest. This detention continued till December 31, 1919. He was released on January 1, 1920. In 1921 Maulana Azad started a weekly named "Paigham". But it was banned in December 1921 and he was arrested. Maulana Azad's detention continued till January 1, 1921. In 1927, Maulana Azad restarted the publication of "Al-Hilal" and this weekly continued to be published till the end of the year. Apart from these publications, Maulana Azad was in the forefront in all the major movements for the independence like the Khilafat Movement (1919-23), the Non-Cooperation Movement (1920-22) the Civil Disobedience Movement (1930-32) and the Quit India Movement (1942). He was a strong advocate of undivided India and had the foresight to predict that the Urdu-speaking Muslims of India leaving for either East or West Pakistan will be marginalized by the local population. This has come true today when one looks at the plight of the "Mohajirs" in Pakistan and "Biharis" in Bangladesh.
EDUCATIONIST
He was the first to raise the issue of the National System of Education which is today the bed-rock of the National Policy on Education in 1986 and updated in 1992. The concept implies that, upto a given level, all students, irrespective of caste, creed, location or sex have access to education of a comparable quality. All educational programmes, he said, must be carried out in strict conformity with secular values and constitutional framework. He stood for a common educational structure of 10+2+3 throughout India. If Maulana Azad were alive today he would have been the happiest to see the implementation of children’s Right to Free Education Act 2009. The Right to Education Act seeks to make free and compulsory education to children as a fundamental legal right. The 86th Constitutional Amendment inserted Article 21(a) as Right to Education as a fundamental human right. The wealth of the nation, according to Maulana Azad, was not in the country’s banks but in primary schools. The Maulana was also a great votary of the concept of Neighbourhood schools and the Common School System. In 1947 when the Interim Government was formed Maulana Azad was included as Member for Education and Arts. On August 15, 1947 when India attained Independence he became Free India’s first Education Minister with a cabinet rank where he achieved a number of distinctions and established institutions of excellence to promote education and Indian culture. Among the new institutions he established were the three National Academies namely the Sangeet Natak Academy (1953), Sahitya Academy (1954) and Lalit Kala Academy (1954). The Indian Council for Cultural Relations having been established by him earlier in 1950. The Maulana felt that the cultural content in Indian Education was very low during the British rule and needs to be strengthened through curriculum. As Chairman of the Central Advisory Board of Education, an apex body to recommend to the Government educational reform both at the centre and the states including Universities, he advocated, in particular, universal primary education, free and compulsory for all children upto the age of 14, girls education, vocational training, agricultural education and technical education. He established University Grants Commission (UGC) in 1956 by an Act of Parliament for disbursement of grants and maintainence of standards in Indian universities. He firmly believed with Nehru that if the universities discharged their functions well, all will help Nation’s progress. He opined that the universities have not only academic functions, but also social responsibilities as well. He was a pioneer in the field of adult education. His greatest contribution, however, is that in spite of being an eminent scholar of Urdu, Persian and Arabic he stood for the retention of English language for educational advantages and national and international needs. However primary education should be imparted in the mother-tongue. On the technical education side he strengthened All Indian Council for Technical Education. The Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur was established in 1951 followed by a chain of IIT’s at Bombay, Madras and Kanpur and Delhi. School of Planning and Architecture came into existence at Delhi in 1955.
*11th November is being observed as National Education Day across the country..

No Indian university in world's top 100
Our Correspondent, 21 June 2013

Cash-strapped and resource-poor Indian universities have failed to make it to a list of the world's top 100 institutions under 50 years old, published by The Times.

South Korea's Pohang University of Science and Technology heads a list of the world's Top 100 "young" universities for the second consecutive year.
The annual '100 Under 50' rankings, published by The Times newspaper's 'Higher Education' supplement here on Wednesday, also found China and Russia lagging behind in terms of newer universities.

"South Korea's experience shows that it is possible for nations with sufficient political will to build in a relatively short time world-class universities that can compete with the traditional elites in the US and the UK," said Phil Baty, editor of Times Higher Education rankings.
"We haven't found many examples of India's universities under 50 years which are currently meeting our tough global standards," he added.

The 100 Under 50 is based on the same 13 performance indicators covering teaching, research, interaction with industry and internationalisation that underpin the supplement's definitive World University Rankings, although academic reputation is less significant.
To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, universities have to be 50 years old or younger, founded in 1963 onwards. The ranking provides a fresh perspective on the concept of the "elite university", which some believe better reflects past glories and reputation built up over centuries than current academic excellence.

"The traditional elite cannot afford to coast on centuries of history and tradition or rely too heavily on reputation. There is a new breed of dynamic universities emerging quickly and visibly to challenge for their crowns," Baty said.
The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (Kaist) also rises from fifth to third, while the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology drops one place to fourth.

Only one UK institution the University of York, in seventh place makes the top 10, compared with three last year. After York, the highest-placed UK institutions are the University of Warwick (13th), Lancaster University (14th) and the University of East Anglia (16th).
Overall, however, the UK still has the most representatives in the list, with 18 in the top 100 institutions but down from 20 last year. Other strong national systems include Australia (13 institutions), the US (eight), France (seven), Spain (six) and Taiwan (five).

"Women's Empowerment - a Myth or Reality" a talk show in association with Young Indians
Bhopal 2013: To mark the presence of International Women's Day, Sant Hirdaram Girls College, Bhopal organized a Talk show. The show was jointly organized by Young Indians, Sant Hirdaram Girls College, Bhopal and All India Women Conference (AIWC), Bhopal Chapter. The program took place in the pious presence of Rev. Sidh Bhauji.

The theme of the talk show was "Women's Empowerment - a Myth or Reality". Reputed panelists from different walks of life were invited to throw a light on this critical issue. The event was organized at Sant Hirdaram Auditorium, Sant Hirdaram Nagar, Bhopal. The talk show was conducted by Ms Ankita Rajdev , Ms Archana , Ms Deepika and Ms Sugandha. Various valuable points were made by the representatives from the young Indians.

Empowerment' means 'to vest with authority, to authorize', but the achievements of women are very much real and hard-won. India is one of the few countries where males significantly outnumber females, and this imbalance has increased over time. There is a famous saying by Jawaharlal Nehru "You can tell the condition of a nation by looking at the status of its women".

Panelist Mr. Amit Saxena, Young Indians representative said, "To know the real status of women's empowerment in India, we can perhaps consider some figures. Indian women typically spend 35 hours per week on household tasks and caring for family-members, as against 4 hours per week put in by men. Women are considered as the hub center of the family. Women's rights and issues have always been a subject of serious concern. From pastoral society to global society, the role of Women has changed drastically. With the process of Industrialization, Modernization and Globalization showing its deep impact on the human society all over the world, the role and responsibilities of Women has attained new definition and perspective."

Panelists Dr. Reena Arya, Legal Expert, Ms. Preeti Sherawat and Dr Gaurav Raj Bhagat, Educationist said, "One of the most disturbing obstacles to women's empowerment is the growing trend of violence against women. This violence takes place in many forms–dowry harassment, bride burning, eve-teasing, sexual harassment at the workplace, marital violence and rape. To each of these victims, women’s empowerment may just be an empty, broken promise. However, there are encouraging signs. Currently, in the Indian IT industry, women form 45 per cent of the total workforce. More women are stepping out and speaking up, demanding and getting education and employment and some semblance of equality."

Panelists Dr Prashant Pattak, Sociologist and Ms. Anita Tiwari, Home Maker said, "From Indira Gandhi to today's Sonia-Mayawati-Mamata in politics, from Indra Nooyi and Naina Lal Kidwai in the corporate world to Arundhati Roy and Medha Patkar in the areas of injustice; famous Indian women achievers do make a long list. This is the urban age and Women along with men are here to make an impact, they have occupied secondary position vis-a-vis men. So, women's empowerment is neither a myth, nor a fully-achieved reality, but a work in progress. A process that started long ago and far away, but is carried forward each time a woman asserts her rights. May be the coming generations will have an easier choice, a smoother flight, a safer freedom, and a more equal empowerment, for the betterment of the entire human race."
